Turning on your heating only to discover your boiler has stopped working can be frustrating, especially during colder weather. If your boiler display is showing a fault code, don’t panic.

Depending on the manufacturer, these codes may appear as combinations of letters and numbers such as F22, F75, EA, E133 or A01. Although every manufacturer uses different codes, they generally relate to similar types of problems.

- Low system pressure
- Blocked condensate pipe
- Ignition or gas supply problems
- Overheating
- Pump or fan faults
- Electrical or sensor issues
The fault code itself is not usually the problem. It is simply your boiler’s way of telling you where the issue may be.
Step 1: Check Your Boiler Pressure
The first thing to check is the pressure of your heating system.
Most modern boilers operate best between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If the pressure drops too low, many boilers will automatically lock out.
Depending on your boiler model, you’ll either have:
- A traditional pressure gauge beneath the boiler or on the front panel.
- A digital pressure reading shown on the display screen.
For example, many newer Vaillant boilers display the pressure on the LCD screen after selecting the information menu.
If the pressure is below the recommended range, your boiler may simply need repressurising. Your boiler’s instruction manual will explain the correct procedure, or a heating engineer can advise if you’re unsure.
Step 2: Try Resetting the Boiler
Once you’ve confirmed the pressure is correct, the next step is to reset the boiler.
Most boilers have a dedicated reset button, although its location varies between manufacturers.
Typically, you’ll need to:
- Press and hold the reset button for several seconds.
- Wait while the boiler begins its start-up sequence.
- Check whether the fault code disappears.
If the boiler starts normally and continues running, the issue may have been temporary.
If the fault code immediately returns or the boiler shuts down again, further investigation is needed.
Step 3: Check the Condensate Pipe
One of the most common causes of boiler lockouts, particularly during winter, is a blocked condensate pipe.
The condensate pipe removes slightly acidic wastewater produced by modern condensing boilers.
If this pipe becomes blocked by ice, debris, or a blockage in the household waste pipe, the boiler will usually stop operating as a safety precaution.
You can carry out a simple visual inspection by locating the plastic condensate pipe beneath your boiler.
If you’re comfortable doing so, check whether:
- The pipe appears frozen (during cold weather).
- There are obvious blockages.
- Nearby sinks or waste pipes are also blocked, preventing water from draining correctly.
If you suspect the pipe is frozen or blocked but aren’t confident dealing with it yourself, it’s safest to contact a qualified heating engineer.
Step 4: Check Your Gas Supply
If your boiler has power but still won’t ignite, it’s worth checking whether gas is reaching your home.
A quick way to do this is by testing another gas appliance, such as:
- A gas hob
- A gas oven
- A gas fire (if fitted)
If none of your gas appliances are working, there may be an issue with your gas supply rather than the boiler itself.
If you smell gas at any point, do not attempt to investigate further. Leave the property if necessary and contact the National Gas Emergency Service immediately.
What If My Boiler Is Still Showing a Fault Code?
If you’ve checked the pressure, attempted a reset, inspected the condensate pipe and confirmed your gas supply is working, the fault is likely to require professional diagnosis.
Modern boilers contain sophisticated components, including:
- Electronic control boards
- Temperature sensors
- Pumps
- Fans
- Gas valves
- Ignition systems
- Safety devices
These parts should only be tested and repaired by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
