Recognising when you require a boiler service versus a heating repair is vital. Boiler servicing, akin to a car’s MOT, is an annual check-up for safety, efficiency, and performance, including replacing specified parts as instructed by the manufacturer. Mainly, a boiler service is preventive, catching issues before they happen!
Boiler repairs, however, are required when a breakdown occurs and your boiler stops producing heating or hot water. Our standard boiler servicing and “Cosy Plan” service plan does not cover repairs or faulty boilers, focusing instead on preventive maintenance.

Make sure your boiler has power and the fuse hasn’t tripped, it’s a simple check that can often save a callout.
Check that your boiler’s water pressure is at the correct level, low pressure can stop your heating from working properly.

All boiler manufacturers’ pricing varies from each other, and sometimes there may be multiple different fans, pumps, valves, and gaskets priced differently from each other. We have provided this list as a guideline to help you understand why some repairs are quite affordable and some hurt the bank.

Sometimes. A condemned boiler may be repairable if the unsafe component can be replaced and the appliance can be restored to the required safety standards. However, an older boiler with extensive damage, unavailable parts, or several serious faults may need replacing.
Never use a boiler displaying a “Danger Do Not Use” notice. It must remain switched off until an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer has repaired and checked it.
You can complete basic checks such as checking the power supply, thermostat settings and boiler pressure, following the manufacturer’s instructions. You should not remove the boiler casing or attempt to repair its gas, combustion or internal components yourself.

First, check the boiler’s power supply, pressure, thermostat and displayed fault code without removing its casing. If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or see a warning label, leave the boiler off, ventilate the property where safe and seek emergency assistance.
While waiting for an engineer, use safe alternative heaters, close curtains and internal doors, and protect vulnerable occupants from the cold. If freezing temperatures are expected, ask an engineer for advice on protecting the heating system and pipes. Never use an outdoor heater, barbecue or gas hob to heat your home.
A boiler may continue operating temporarily with a faulty expansion vessel, but it is unlikely to work correctly or reliably. Common signs include pressure rising sharply when the heating is on, pressure falling when the system cools, water discharging from the external pressure-relief pipe or repeatedly needing to repressurise the boiler.
Continuing to use it could place additional strain on the system and lead to further faults. Arrange an inspection so an engineer can determine whether the vessel can be recharged or needs replacing.
A suspected gas regulator fault should only be assessed by a suitably qualified professional. Depending on which regulator is affected and the nature of the fault, it may need adjustment or complete replacement rather than repair.
Do not tamper with a regulator on the boiler, gas pipework or meter. If you smell gas or suspect a supply problem, turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, ventilate the property and contact the National Gas Emergency Service.

Replacement may offer better value if breakdowns are becoming frequent or a major component has failed.

Repair & Care is a maintenance & support plan for your broken-down boiler, providing a one-off repair (where repairable) and then ongoing maintenance and support for your boiler and controls, to help ensure they continue to work correctly and to minimise the chances of mechanical and electrical breakdown.
If you have taken out a Repair & Care plan, you have a no fix no fee promise. If the expert engineer can’t fix the initial fault or if the boiler is beyond economic repair, you’ll get a full refund of any monies paid up under the plan until that point – no questions asked.

Boiler repairs will cover your Worcester boiler and its Worcester controls for labour, VAT, and most parts. However, should the boiler require a significant/structural part (such as a shell, tank, or back plate) or if it is beyond economical repair, then the engineer will quote a revised charge on the day.
